Hey folks, I have a few macbooks and macbook pros in the household all of which came with the Tiger, so I have quite a few of those gray DVDs with the various versions of Tiger on them. I was wondering if you guys could help me out with the instructions on creating a single install DVD with Tiger 10.4.11 on it which I could use to reinstall Tiger on both macbook and macbook pro laptops? I know how to make the dmg from a DVD disc, but I don't know: 1. How to mount the dmg so I could edit files on it? Which file(s) will I need to edit in order to allow the disc to install on different types of Apple hardware (all intel machines tho)?
How to slipstream the 10.4.11 update (to get to the build 8S2165 right after installation) into the dmg (is there a Slipy equivalent for Tiger)? Thanks in advance, any help will be greatly appreciated! Dave, it's hard to still find relevant information on this subject for Tiger now that Leopard is out, but I have found the references to 'distribution' file on the Tiger discs, which can be edited to allow installation on more than one type of the machine.
Also, didn't Apple used to sell the retail Tiger discs? The should have worked on all supported hardware. So I reckon it's possible to make a Tiger disc which will install just fine on all intel macs.
Regarding the slip-streaming, there used to be a little app called Slipy (for 10.3 anyways) which would slip-stream updates and apps onto the Mac OS X installation disc. Given what Pacifist can do, I assumed that one can extract the contents of the combo updater onto the properly (rw) mounted OS X installation image.
But I'm at loss about how exactly it should be done, so I'm looking for help. Anyone can help?
2006 – ships on DVD media, which is great if you have a Mac equipped with a DVD drive (as most of us do these days), since the entire set of installer files can be contained on one disc, eliminating the necessity of disc-swapping in the middle of the process. However, there are certain older Macs that are officially supported by a Tiger (i.e., that have built-in FireWire) but don’t have optical drives that support DVDs – notably some low-end iBooks and early low-end eMacs. My Late 2002 has only a CD-ROM drive, and some of the education-only Macs were also CD-only. Mac OS X Version 10.4 (PPC) requires a Macintosh with: • PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor • Built-in FireWire • At least 256 MB of physical RAM (512 MB recommended) • A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer • At least 3 GB of available space on your hard drive; 4 GB of disk space if you install Xcode 2 developer tools • DVD drive for installation (or get CD media from Apple for $9.95) There are several possible workarounds.
